Do You Have to Give Up Your Nightly Glass of Wine if You’re Doing the Keto Diet?
The Short Answer
Some low carb wines are allowed on the Keto diet.
The Long Answer
Wine can be nice at the end of a long day, and the good news for practitioners of Keto is that you don’t have to give that up when following the diet. There are many varieties of wine that are low in carbohydrates and will keep you well under your daily carb limit.
Some varieties of wine permitted on Keto are:
- Merlot
- Pinot Noir
- Cabernet
- Chardonnay
- Pinot Grigio
- Riesling
- Champagne/Sparkling Wine
When drinking alcohol on the Keto diet, there is one thing to always remember. While low carb wine is permitted, any alcohol intake can temporarily slow the weight loss process. Alcohol can be used as an alternative fuel source by the body, but unlike carbs, once it is burned off ketosis can resume. Still though, this pause in ketosis might dampen your results.
Another thing to remember is that when following a ketogenic diet, your alcohol tolerance will be greatly reduced. Carbohydrates help to soak up alcohol in the stomach, thus slowing the intoxication process. Without any carbs in your system, the alcohol is immediately metabolized and, as a result, you get much drunker much faster. Please drink responsibly, Keto friends.
What is Keto?
The Ketogenic Diet, or Keto, is a low carb, high fat diet which helps you lose weight by forcing the body into a state of ketosis. On the Keto diet, users force the body to shed pounds by feeding on fat broken down in the liver, rather than carbohydrates and glucose.
When we eat a lot of carbohydrates, the body produces both insulin and glucose. The body feeds on the glucose to produce energy and stores fat, rather than burning it. With keto, you can lose weight, improve your overall health, and enrich yourself in both body and mind.
