Shrimp is a Versatile Shellfish, Found in Both Main Entrees and Appetizer Bites. Can You Still Indulge Your Shrimp Cravings if You’re on the Keto Diet?
The Short Answer:
Yes, shrimp is a perfect food for Keto.
The Long Answer:
Shrimp is one of my all-time favorite foods, so when I was trying to figure out if the Keto diet could be for me, the inclusion of this versatile shellfish made the top of my priorities list. I was pleased to find that not only is shrimp allowed on Keto, but it is one of the main foods recommended by many Keto sites.
Shellfish are, for the most part, great for keto, but you can’t make a sweeping statement about them. Many shellfish contain carbohydrates, so it’s important to do your homework, lest you ruin your daily macros. Shrimp, however, contains no carbs whatsoever, so it’s a perfect addition to your Keto day.
That being said, some shrimp recipes are a no-go. Any kind of breading attached to shrimp should be avoided at all costs, but when you can wrap your shrimp in bacon, who needs breading?
What is Keto?
The Ketogenic Diet, or Keto, is a low carb, high fat diet that helps you lose weight by forcing the body into a state of ketosis. When we eat a lot of carbohydrates, the body produces both insulin and glucose. The body feeds on the glucose to produce energy and stores fat, rather than burning it. On the Keto diet, users force the body to shed pounds by feeding on fat broken down in the liver rather than carbohydrates and glucose. Since your body is using the fat instead of storing it, you lose weight, improve your overall health and enrich yourself in both body and mind.
