Keto practitioners have to give up a lot of their favorite foods in the name of weight loss. But what about salsa? Can you be Keto and still have salsa?
The Short Answer
Yes, most salsa is keto, though you have to check the ingredients
The Long Answer
I’ve got some good news! Salsa is perfectly ok on a keto diet. It’s a perfect low carb accouterment that adds a needed burst of Mexican flavor to any meal.
I understand why some people are a bit confused by this. Tomatoes are botanically a fruit, and fruits are generally not allowed on the keto diet. Thankfully, tomatoes are one of those rare exceptions to the rule and tomato salsa is a welcomed addition to the keto lifestyle. (Though not in excess)
I would recommend making your own salsa, however, as a lot of the store-bought jars of salsa add sugar and other ingredients that can load the product up with carbs and dropkick you right out of ketosis.
If you can’t make it yourself for whatever reason, read those labels and know for sure what you’re putting in your body before it messes with your macros.
What is Keto?
The Ketogenic Diet, or Keto, is a low carb, high fat diet which helps you lose weight by forcing the body into a state of ketosis. On the Keto diet, users force the body to shed pounds by feeding on fat broken down in the liver, rather than carbohydrates and glucose.
When we eat a lot of carbohydrates, the body produces both insulin and glucose. The body feeds on the glucose to produce energy and stores fat, rather than burning it. With keto, you can lose weight, improve your overall health, and enrich yourself in both body and mind. Learn more about the Keto Diet here.
