It’s one of the most common condiments on the planet, but if you’re on a ketogenic diet, can you still have mustard?
The Short Answer:
Yes, mustard is a perfect addition to a keto diet.
The Long Answer:
Ah, mustard. It is one of the most commonly used condiments on the planet, topping everything from ham to hot dogs and pretzels. It comes in many different varieties, such as yellow, brown, dijon, and spicy, but no matter how you take your mustard one thing remains certain. It is one of the best condiments for a low carb diet like keto.
That’s not to say that all mustard should be included in a keto diet. As always, it’s best to read your labels before making any decisions. If you see any kind of sugar or artificial sweetener in there, steer clear. And yes, this does include sweet mustards like honey mustard. Sorry chicken finger lovers. (But you can’t eat breaded chicken on keto anyway, so you’ll be fine)
Mustard is made from the seeds of a mustard plant. (Yes, that’s a real thing) The seeds are ground to make various different types of mustard. Those seeds are then mixed together with water, vinegar, lemon juice, wine, salt, and flavorings/spices which creates the paste that we commonly refer to as mustard.
Mustard was first cultivated in the Indus valley, but it was the Romans who first experimented with it as a condiment. Early mustard was mixed with unfermented grape juice to create what the Romans referred to as “burning must” or mustum ardens. Take the beginnings of both of those words and smash them together and it gives you mustard.
What is Keto?
The Ketogenic Diet, or Keto, is a low carb, high fat diet which helps you lose weight by forcing the body into a state of ketosis. On the Keto diet, users force the body to shed pounds by feeding on fat broken down in the liver, rather than carbohydrates and glucose.
When we eat a lot of carbohydrates, the body produces both insulin and glucose. The body feeds on the glucose to produce energy and stores fat, rather than burning it. With keto, you can lose weight, improve your overall health, and enrich yourself in both body and mind. Learn more about the Keto Diet here.
