The Keto diet forces you to give up a lot of foods for the sake of ketosis. But what about millet? Can millet still be enjoyed on a keto diet?
The Short Answer:
No, millet cannot be included in a ketogenic diet.
The Long Answer
Millet is the term used to describe a high variable group of small-seeded grasses. They are considered a cereal grain, which right there should tell you all that you need to know about their potential inclusion in a keto diet.
The success of keto relies on your body remaining in a state of ketosis, wherein the body will pull on fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. That’s why the mantra of keto has always been high in fat, low in carbohydrates.
The greatest enemy of ketosis is the grain food group because it’s one of the most carbohydrate heavy groups of foods out there. When you’re cutting back on the carbs it means you have to take all that bread, rice, quinoa, farro, and millet out of the equation.
The keto diet relies on numbers. Your keto macros are what you live and die on with this program. Carbohydrates should be kept to a maximum of 5% of your daily intake. Just 100 grams of millet contains 72.85 carbs, which is a truly massive amount.
That means consuming millet can bring an immediate halt to your ketosis state. The body will begin harvesting those carbohydrates for energy and all of the fat that you’re eating will be stored for later use.
When it comes to the keto diet, just say no to millet.
What is Keto?
The Ketogenic Diet, or Keto, is a low carb, high fat diet which helps you lose weight by forcing the body into a state of ketosis. On the Keto diet, users force the body to shed pounds by feeding on fat broken down in the liver, rather than carbohydrates and glucose.
When we eat a lot of carbohydrates, the body produces both insulin and glucose. The body feeds on the glucose to produce energy and stores fat, rather than burning it. With keto, you can lose weight, improve your overall health, and enrich yourself in both body and mind. Learn more about the Keto Diet here.
