If milk really does do a body good does that mean it should be allowed on the keto diet? Do you have to give up milk if you’re trying to live a ketogenic lifestyle?
The Short Answer
Yes, milk is allowed on the ketogenic diet.
The Long Answer:
One of the major bonuses about the keto diet for a lot of people is that it is one of the few health plans that allow you to keep dairy in your life. And the backbone of all dairy products is milk.
Milk is 100% ok on a keto diet but that doesn’t mean you should abuse it. Whole milk is perfectly fine but it does have some carbs in it. So that means over-reliance can seriously throw off your daily macros. That doesn’t mean milk has no health benefits. Far from it.
Milk contains a lot of essential vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Calcium, Potassium, and Phosphorous.
Obviously, if you’re lactose intolerant it’s a good idea to avoid milk and all dairy products, regardless of what diet you’re on. Keto is not a cure for lactose intolerance.
If you’re going to be drinking milk on the keto diet, stick with whole milk as it has a higher fat content than other varieties and will fit into your macros better.
While milk works very well on keto, it also shouldn’t be the first beverage you’re reaching for when trying to maintain a low carb lifestyle.
