This creamy dressing spread is a common accompaniment to many foods. If you’re on a keto diet, do you have to cut mayo from your life?
The Short Answer:
Yes, most mayonnaise can be eaten on the keto diet, provided there is no added sugar.
The Long Answer:
I’ve found that mayonnaise is a love it or hate it food product. There are people who are die-hard enthusiasts, and those that can’t even hear the name without gagging.
I’m the former. I love mayo on sandwiches, burgers, and more. So, when I started the Keto diet, I was worried I would have to cut it out fully.
I was pleased to find out that I didn’t have to, though there were some caveats.
Unfortunately, a lot of store brand mayos add a lot of sugar into the product for taste. Those need to be avoided at all costs. Check the label (which you should always be doing on keto anyway) and see if they’re adding additional sugar. If they are then unfortunately it’s a no-go.
However, when you look at the typical mayo ingredients, you’ll quickly realize that it should be a keto lover’s dream product.
- Egg yolk
- Lemon juice
- Water
- Dijon mustard
- Olive Oil
- Salt
All of these items are perfect for those of you who have changed their lifestyle over to keto. Unfortunately, a lot of food companies take the easy way out and fill their ingredient list with non-compliant sweeteners. Thankfully, mayo is easy to make at home as long as you have a blender and a steady hand.
Combining the ingredients within a blender works wonders but remember to pour the oil in slowly or you’ll be left with a liquid mayo soup.
What is Keto?
The Ketogenic Diet, or Keto, is a low carb, high fat diet which helps you lose weight by forcing the body into a state of ketosis. On the Keto diet, users force the body to shed pounds by feeding on fat broken down in the liver, rather than carbohydrates and glucose.
When we eat a lot of carbohydrates, the body produces both insulin and glucose. The body feeds on the glucose to produce energy and stores fat, rather than burning it. With keto, you can lose weight, improve your overall health, and enrich yourself in both body and mind. Learn more about the Keto Diet here.
