If You’re on the Keto Diet Does That Mean You Have to Give Up Ketchup?
The Short Answer:
Regular Ketchup is not a part of the keto diet.
The Long Answer
Ketchup is amazing. I love it and would put it on everything if I could get away with it. Regular ketchup, however is high in carbohydrates and sugar, and flies in the face of the keto diet. If you’re counting carbs and you have some to spare, adding a dab of ketchup to something likely won’t completely derail you, but it’s a good way to needlessly max out your keto macros.
Some organic and sugar-free ketchups can be used sparingly as their carb count is far lower than the regular stuff. I personally recommend using mustard and hot sauce in place of ketchup as they are far better for you and adhere to the keto guidelines.
What Is Keto?
The Ketogenic Diet, or Keto, is a low carb, high fat diet that helps you lose weight by forcing the body into a state of ketosis. On the Keto diet, users force the body to shed pounds by feeding on fat broken down in the liver, rather than carbohydrates and glucose.
When we eat a lot of carbohydrates, the body produces both insulin and glucose. The body feeds on the glucose to produce energy and stores fat, rather than burning it. With keto, you can lose weight, improve your overall health and enrich yourself in both body and mind.
