Meatballs are a wonderful addition to any Italian meal. If you’re on the Keto diet, does that mean you can no longer have your favorite Italian bite-sized meat treat?
The Short Answer
Meatballs are not Keto, but there are Keto meatball alternatives.
The Long Answer
When I embarked on the Keto diet, I was worried that my Italian heart was doomed to go unfulfilled in the realm of my all time favorite comfort food, meatballs. Typically, meatballs contain bread or breadcrumbs as the main ingredient. This helps the balls maintain their shape. The presence of bread is a direct Keto violation, but all is not lost.
I found that ground up pork rinds made for a great alternative to traditional bread or breadcrumbs. This eliminates the carbohydrate component of meatballs and adds some additional fat, making it a perfect Keto meal.
What is Keto?
The Ketogenic Diet, or Keto, is a low carb, high fat diet which helps you lose weight by forcing the body into a state of ketosis. On the Keto diet, users force the body to shed pounds by feeding on fat broken down in the liver, rather than carbohydrates and glucose.
When we eat a lot of carbohydrates, the body produces both insulin and glucose. The body feeds on the glucose to produce energy and stores fat, rather than burning it. With Keto, you can lose weight, improve your overall health and enrich yourself in both body and mind.
